Principal Watry’s Welcome Information

Greetings Erie Middle School Families;

On behalf of our Erie Middle School staff, I would like to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year! We are honored to have the opportunity to partner with you to assure a successful year for your student. We share the immense responsibility for our children’s development and achievement and we appreciate your trust and support. We are committed to collaborate and communicate with you to ensure all students are challenged with engaging instruction while providing the necessary level of support to foster growth.

Erie Middle School is an incredible learning environment. We are rated at Performance, Colorado Department of Education’s highest level of accreditation. Our students continue to reach achievement levels above other schools in Colorado on our state assessments. Our school has assembled a world-class staff dedicated to keeping your child on the path to college preparedness and future success. As a Pre-Advanced placement focused school, we implement rigorous instruction to prepare all students for the demands of Advanced Placement (AP) courses and college level coursework when they transition to Erie High School. Rigorous instruction at Erie Middle School includes the integration of innovation and design thinking into our students’ learning to push the limits of their imagination. Our classrooms include solid instructional strategies, such as project based and blended learning to engage students at a rigorous level. In addition, teachers provide leadership opportunities and connections within our community that are essential to foster citizenship. Our approach of teaming at every grade level allows teachers to focus supports with a smaller groups of students. We also have a strong advisory program (Pride Time) that implements social-emotional learning and utilizes flexible academic interventions and enrichment.

At Erie Middle, student engagement extends beyond our traditional, academic courses. Students have the opportunity to choose from a diverse selection of elective courses, co-curricular activities, and student-led clubs. Over 75 percent of our students are involved in some form of school activity beyond the learning day. Students are challenged and encouraged at this crucial time in their development to explore their growing interests and strengths. Through these enriching, diverse learning experiences, students are prepared for success as they continue into high school and beyond.

We want to make you aware of a few dates to add to your calendar as we move into August:

  • Please mark your calendar for Back to School Night! This will be an excellent opportunity to meet your student’s teachers. Please check our website for more information.

    • Sixth Grade and Electives | August 12 from 5-6:30 p.m.

    • Seventh and Eighth Grade | August 13 from 5-6:30 p.m.

  • The first day of school for sixth grade and NEW seventh and eighth grade students is Tuesday, August 13. This day with new students creates a comfortable atmosphere for students to familiarize themselves with the routines and procedures of a new school, build relationships, meet teachers, troubleshoot problems and ease into middle school. For 6th grade, the morning is dedicated to our Where Everybody Belongs (WEB) camp. This is led by returning eighth-grade students who conduct team building activities, answer questions and concerns, help solve problems, and partner with your student to relieve some of the stress that comes with the first day of school. Returning seventh and eighth grade students will join us for school on Wednesday, August 14.  Students may bring supplies on that day. Please see the district website for the middle school supply list or go to the link District Supply Lists

  • Schedules will be open for viewing starting August 9. Due to the need to balance numbers 7th and 8th grade students may not get every requested elective. While your student may not see their top choices on the schedule for the first quarter, the class may be on the schedule later in the year.  Please note that we do not make adjustments to classes based on requests for specific teachers or elective courses. You may contact our counseling team at [email protected] or [email protected] with any additional questions.

  • Across St. Vrain Valley Schools, every middle school student is equipped with a personal iPad. We are committed to supporting your family in utilizing this incredible tool in the safest and most productive way possible. We will share information during Back to School Night so that you can better understand how your students will be using this technology. The following are days for iPad checkout to students during the school day:

    • Eighth grade – August 19

    • Seventh grade – August 20

    • Sixth grade – August 26

Thank you again for the opportunity to partner during such a significant time in your child’s life. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and if you have any questions or concerns, please email me directly.
