Hello EMS Parents and Families,
What an amazing start to the school year! It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the first quarter. We believe EMS has the best students in the St. Vrain Valley School District, and they continue to amaze us everyday in the classroom, halls, and in their extra-curricular activities.
A priority for Erie Middle School is to continue to support a community where all students feel safe, connected and valued. Every year we focus on and reinforce positive behaviors that we want to see from our students. ROARS is our acronym for RESPECT, ORGANIZATION, ACHIEVEMENT, RELATIONSHIPS and SAFETY, and this is used to frame our expectations for our students. Our students are kind, courteous and respectful and are continually striving to meet our ROARS expectations in everything they do and in all areas of our building. As a staff, we love to celebrate our students. Examples include ROARS coupons to spend at the school store, an Above and Beyond Award, and the Eye of the Tiger Award. The result of this positive approach is reduced office referrals and suspension rates.
This year, we also have introduced a new social emotional curriculum, 7 Mindsets. With our positive behavior supports such as our ROARS expectations and 7 Mindsets, there is a continued emphasis to help to create a positive, welcoming, and safe climate and culture within our building. The 7 Mindsets curriculum is helping our students develop strategies to navigate life and approach situations in their lives with a positive outlook. For example, discussions are helping students see how to handle conflict and adversity. This work is creating connections with adults in the building so that they have multiple people they can work with if conflict or issues arise, and they need support. Each month our students will explore a different mindset in hopes they can apply it to their daily lives to help continue to build on the foundations they already have. You can get more information here on the mindset your students will be exploring each month. This month, we have been exploring the idea that Everything is Possible. Hopefully your student has come home and shared with you some of the activities or discussions they have had in their Pride Time classes around the four critical components of this mindset. If you would like to extend this learning at home or incorporate some activities as a family, please visit this page for information and ideas.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in working with your students. It is an honor to be a part of such an incredible community. Please reach out to us at anytime if you have questions or concerns about any situation.
