Principal Watry’s October Update

Greetings EMS Parents and Families,

Erie Middle School is an incredible learning environment, due in large part to our caring community. We appreciate the continued collaboration with you to prepare every student for future success. As we move into October, we are guiding our students to explore their passions and interests, and we continue to celebrate their strengths and success. We would like to share information about upcoming community events at Erie Middle School that support this focus.

Miner’s Blast will be this Saturday, October 5th, at Coal Creek Park. We are excited to have our Innovation Mobile Lab at the event from 12pm – 4pm. Students and community members will have the opportunity to explore several stations that will include: Spheros, Drones, Design Thinking, Green Screen and VR. A few select Erie Middle School students from our technology courses will be in attendance to share their work with the community.

The EMS Club and Activity Fair Experience (Café) will be Thursday, October 24th from 6:00-7:00 PM. At Erie Middle School, our success comes not just from our strong academic focus, but also from our emphasis on community, connections and relationships. We want to know your child’s unique strengths, both in and outside of the school, and find ways to support their growth as future leaders. We encourage involvement in elective programs and after-school clubs to enrich the learning experience and build relationships. Our elective program provides opportunities during the day through a variety of choices such as FCS, Robotics, Geek Squad, Spanish, Photography and an assortment of art and music courses. Additionally, EMS offers close to 30 clubs and activities that allow exploration in computer science skills, robotics, writing, art, music, physical fitness, student government and more. Such experiences gives students the confidence and skills necessary for success in honors and Advanced Placement courses at the high school level. Families and students are invited to EMS Café to learn more about the unique experiences we offer to our students.

Following the end of 1st Quarter on October 11th, we will recognize our 1st quarter Honor Roll and perfect attendance students. At EMS, we spotlight our students’ success by recognizing our Honor Roll students who earned a GPA of 3.5-3.74 as well as our Principal’s Honor Roll students who earned a GPA of 3.75-4.0. Honor Roll students will receive certificates and recognition during Pride Time classes. Students on the Principal’s Honor Roll will receive an invitation to attend a special breakfast. This is an informal event where students and families may pick up their certificate and a snack, while they mingle. We have many students attending the breakfast, so we split the event into two days. 6th grade will be held Thursday, October 31st from 7:30-8:15 AM, and 7th and 8th grade will be held Friday, November 1st from 7:30-8:15 AM. We understand the importance of every student attending every day. It is not easy to attend every day, so students who achieve perfect attendance will also be invited to attend the breakfast celebration.

As we continue into the second quarter, we encourage you to talk with your student and set goals to promote growth over the next term. What is your student’s goal for this school year? Perhaps it is to have better study habits and organizational skills or to become a stronger reader. Maybe your child hopes to learn new technology skills, play a new instrument or achieve the Honor Roll. Whatever the goal, our wonderful staff is ready to continue to provide excellent opportunities for our students throughout the year that will put them on the path for college preparedness.
