Dean Of Students November Update

Hello EMS Parents and Families,

As Thanksgiving approaches next week, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for allowing all of us at EMS the opportunity to work with your students. We are so lucky to have such wonderful students and families here at Erie Middle that we partner with each day for the success of your students.

Staff and students work each day to create a friendly, safe and welcoming climate and culture where all students feel they belong. Our 8th grade WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) students meet with our 6th grade students each month to mentor and make connections to help them navigate the first year of middle school. Our Student Council members work diligently to put on fun and exciting activities for students and staff such as the Halloween dance, community drives, spirit days and an upcoming staff/student basketball game after the Holidays. Our grade level teams are celebrating our students by hosting grade level assemblies, where they will enjoy their time together with team building activities and awards around the third mindset of We Are Connected

We strive everyday to find various ways to celebrate the successes of our students, as we promote character development with our 7 Mindsets curriculum and reinforce positive behaviors that we want to see from our students.  ROARS is our acronym for RESPECT, ORGANIZATION, ACHIEVEMENT, RELATIONSHIPS and SAFETY, and this is used to frame our expectations for our students. Our students are kind, courteous and respectful and are continually striving to meet our ROARS expectations in everything they do and in all areas of our building. ROARS is an example of a tool used in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) programs as a way for schools to encourage good behavior. With PBIS, schools teach kids about behavior just as they would teach about other subjects like reading or math. The focus of PBIS is prevention.  It is a system of reinforcing the expectations we wish to see with our students to guide them to make positive decisions in the future. The result of this positive approach is reduced office referrals and suspension rates, as well as greater connected between students and staff.  As a staff, we love to celebrate our students. Examples include ROARS coupons to spend at the school store, the Above and Beyond Award, the quarterly Spotlight on Excellence Award and the prestigious Eye of the Tiger Award.  All of these awards are ways that we celebrate our students and let them know when they are exhibiting positive behaviors.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in working with your students. It is an honor to be a part of such an incredible community. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly with any questions.
