Hello EMS Parents and Families,
I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying the fine winter weather we’ve been experiencing lately. As we reach the midway point of the third quarter, as always there is much to talk about regarding the progress of our students and the direction of our school. One of the most important things we stress at Erie Middle School is attendance and the fact that we need your student here. Regular attendance is a strong predictor of success in the classroom, involvement in school extracurriculars/clubs, and a better overall opinion of school in general.
To promote attendance at EMS, we have a Student Attendance Advisory Committee which helps to come up with ideas to improve school-wide attendance. Over the course of this year, these student leaders have planned and implemented grade level assemblies, created posters to promote attendance, and celebrated classes with the top attendance rates for the month. Currently they are working on a video to be shown during the weekly announcements. Moreover, as a school, we regularly reward students with perfect attendance during our quarterly principal’s honor roll and perfect attendance breakfast. We also seek to support and develop individual goals to help students whose attendance can improve. As of February, our school attendance rate is 95.76% (percent of students on campus over the course of the school year), the highest of any traditional middle or high school in the district. Our chronic attendance rate (percent of students who have missed 10% or more of the school year) is 8.6%, which is the second best in the district for traditional secondary schools. Of course none of that success would be possible without parental support at home, which helps to ensure that our message about attendance is not heard only at school.
I look forward to a strong spring semester as we partner together in educating your child. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions you may have.
