Principal Watry’s Start of the Year Update

Hello Erie Middle School Families;

On behalf of our Erie Middle School staff, I would like to welcome you to the 2020-2021 school year! We are honored to have the opportunity to partner with you to assure a successful year for your student. The start of this year is certainly different than any other. Together we will approach this unprecedented situation with optimism, knowing that we are a strong community committed to ensure that all students have a successful year.

Students will begin the year with a 100% online environment that includes blended learning opportunities; this will continue through the last week of September. Please visit for additional information about our SVVSD reopening plan. The online learning plan for this fall will look different from last spring. Students will be expected to engage in synchronous and asynchronous learning at home from 8:00-3:00 and should follow the EMS bell schedule. You will notice on the bell schedule that every student starts the day with Pride Time. This is our advisory program that implements social-emotional learning as well as flexible academic interventions and enrichment. Students will be expected to follow their schedule and log-in to their teacher’s WebEx personal room at the beginning of each class. Be sure to check our resource page for WebEx.Teachers will connect with students to build community and relationships, provide guidance for the day, and document attendance. Monday through Thursday, after attendance and the initial connection with students, the class will consist of 15-30 minutes of synchronous (live) instruction with the teacher in the WebEx personal room as well as asynchronous (individual) work time as outlined by the teacher for that day. On Friday, teachers will hold scheduled office hours for the first 15 minutes of each class period as well as provide additional academic support to individuals and/or groups of students as needed. Students will connect with the teacher in office hours and/or submit an assignment in the first 15 minutes of class on Friday to confirm their attendance. Every member of our staff is dedicated to keeping your child on the path to future success. We are excited to see the opportunity for growth the individual support in this plan could provide, and we look forward to the possibility of returning to a hybrid, in person learning model with students later this year.

Some of our families may have students with medical reasons or special circumstances that would prevent them from returning to the hybrid learning model later in the year. For that reason SVVSD has partnered with Florida Virtual School to create the LaunchED Virtual Academy. This online environment is for families who want to keep their student home until a vaccine is available or there is a significant decrease in the spread of COVID-19. LaunchED has been developed as a year long curriculum, though circumstances may cause a few families to reevaluate at the end of the second quarter December 18th. Families who plan to have students back in the building if we return to the hybrid model should remain with their home school. If you have selected LaunchED and feel that is not the option for your student, unenroll at English LaunchEd Un-Enrollment Spanish LaunchEd Un-Enrollment.

We want to make you aware of a few dates to add to your calendar:
